The vast underground laboratory stretched beneath the Nevada desert like a cathedral dedicated to science. Glass walls reflected soft blue illumination. Polished steel surfaces gleamed beneath recessed lighting. Banks of transparent displays floated above workstations, projecting streams of neural data into the air. The facility represented the culmination of years of work and billions of dollars in private investment. More importantly, it represented the crossing of a threshold from which humanity might never return.

The giant display screen behind her illuminated the room with a glowing title.

A murmur spread through the audience. Journalists adjusted cameras. Scientists exchanged skeptical glances. Government observers sat rigidly in their seats. Every major news network on Earth was broadcasting the event live.

A reporter stood and addressed her. "Doctor Voss, you've stated repeatedly that today's demonstration will fundamentally alter humanity's understanding of consciousness. Can you explain exactly what you mean by that?"
Elena studied the faces before her. She saw doubt. Curiosity. Excitement. Fear.
