Apache: Libri GmbH Apache / The Contract Killer at the Heart of the Quebec Biker Wars / Paperback / 2023

On November 25, 1984, a console television set was delivered to apartment 917 at 1645 de Maisonneuve Boulevard West in Montreal. Inside its chassis were sixteen kilograms of industrial high explosive. The man who built the device was already gone. He was always already gone.Between 1970 and 1985, Yves Trudeau - known across the Quebec underworld as Apache and The Mad Bomber - killed forty-three people for money, with the methodical calm of a man clocking in and out of a shift. He was the Hells Angels' most lethal enforcer, a trained commercial explosives specialist who turned industrial chemistry into a career in murder, and for fifteen years he operated across Montreal's fragmented law enforcement landscape without the institutions around him recognizing the pattern his violence left behind.Apache is not a story about a monster. It is a story about a system - the social collapse that created the Red Zone, the criminal organizations that weaponized it, the policing failures that allowed it to flourish, and the legal bargain that traded forty-three lives for thirteen convictions and released Canada's most prolific contract killer into a suburban community where he abused a child for three years before anyone noticed. Pablo Larkin's forensically researched account asks what it costs a society to look away - and who pays the price.
