Ground-source heat pump systems are often described as one of the most efficient and sustainable methods of heating and cooling buildings. Their fundamental advantage is straightforward: instead of exchanging heat with highly variable outdoor air, they exchange heat with the relatively stable thermal environment of the ground.But the ground is not an infinite heat sink or heat source.A geothermal wellfield can gradually accumulate thermal energy when the annual heat rejected into the ground is consistently greater than the heat extracted from it. Conversely, a heating-dominated building can progressively cool the surrounding ground when extraction exceeds rejection. When this imbalance persists year after year, the temperature field around the boreholes can drift away from its original design condition. The result may be declining heat pump efficiency, increasing pumping and compressor energy, reduced capacity, and increasingly difficult operating conditions.This phenomenon is particularly important because it may remain invisible during the first years of operation.A wellfield can perform exactly as expected during commissioning and still develop a significant thermal imbalance over a decade or more. The problem is therefore not necessarily a conventional equipment failure. It is often a long-term interaction between building loads, ground properties, borehole geometry, operating schedules, and thermal recovery.
