Based on the properties of lignin, a natural chemical component produced when waste paper is broken down and patented by Pirelli, it offers all the benefits of its XC-oriented counterpart, the classic SmartGRIP compound, but combines them in a softer durometer package. Lignin is not only a naturally occurring additive, but also improves the mechanical properties of the rubber, resulting in greater stability than any other compound with the same robustness. This improvement is not at the expense of the other properties of the SmartGRIP compound, namely chemical adhesion: the rider benefits from consistent performance of the tyre throughout its life, even under the higher stresses encountered in downhill riding, for example.
